The invasion of Afghanistan was justified on the grounds of being a retaliation for Sept 11. The problem with this story is that the invasion had already been planned before Sept 11.

When this was revealed, the new spin was that the invasion of Afghanistan had been planned because they knew Bin Laden was up to something and they wanted to get him first. The problem with this story is that initially they said that Sept 11 was a complete surprise, and that the invasion was a retaliation.
